Rodney "Rod" Cary, 55 of West Burlington, died 8:38 p.m. January 28, 2011 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.
Born June 14, 1955 he was the son of Duaine L. and Mildred E. (Tedrow) Cary. He married Beth Snakenberg Helmick on May 4, 1996 in West Burlington.
He was a graduate of West Burlington High School and the University of Iowa School of Journalism.
As a teenager, Rod's first job was working at Hagerla's Market. While in high school he was the announcer for the West Burlington High School sports events. He went on to become a disc jockey and was the "Morning Show" host for KBUR for 28 years. He also hosted "The Drive" for KCPS. He was a member of West Burlington United Methodist Church, Malta Lodge #318 AF&AM, DeMolay and the Salvation Army. He was a past member of the Burlington Kiwanis Club, past announcer for the Burlington Bees and had traveled to Portland, Oregon to announce for the Beavers Minor Baseball Team. He was an avid Chicago Cubs and Bears fan. He loved everything about the Royal Family, and about his family.
Survivors include his wife, Beth Cary of West Burlington; two children; Josh (Jenny) Helmick of Burlington and Jackie Bernand both of Burlington; six grandchildren; Shelby Russell-Helmick, Madison Helmick, Britnie Helmick, Ethan Bernand, Bethannie Bernand and Harlan Bernand; one brother, Jeffrey Cary of Burlington; and three aunts, Maxine Tedrow of Fairfield, Irene (Gene) Krieger of Morning Sun and Dorothy Campbell of West Burlington.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Visitation will be from noon until 8:00 p.m. Thursday, February 3rd, in Lunning Chapel. Following Masonic Rites conducted at 5:30 p.m., the family will receive friends until 8:00 p.m.
The funeral service for Mr. Rod Cary will be 1:30 p.m. Friday, February 4th, in Lunning Chapel. The Rev. Jackie Bradford will officiate. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.
