Obituary
Oscar Bergman, 62, of 718 South Twelfth street, took his own life at his home early Sunday morning in almost the same manner that his wife ended her life four years ago, by inhaling gas from the kitchen stove. No reason is assigned for his act.
Mr. Bergman’s body was found on the kitchen floor by his son, Edwin, who on October 31, 1926, found his mother lying on the same kitchen floor. Both were found in the early hours of a Sunday morning and the gas stove was used in both instances.
Four years ago, Edwin, who lived in an upstairs apartment with his sister and brother in law, Mr. and Mrs. Herman Hartnach, was awakened from his sleep about 2 am by the smell of gas and with his brother in law descended the stairs to find his mother in her kimono on the kitchen floor. She had gone to be with her husband and after he was asleep, slipped into the next room to end her life because of ill health. Yesterday morning, the same son returned home about 2 am, after an evening out, and found his father in the same room, dead by the same means.
Mr. Bergman was a machine operator at Leopold's and had lived in Burlington for 48 years, coming here from Sweden, where he was born, February 16, 1868. He was a member of the West Hill ME church. His son left home Saturday night at 7 o’clock and found his father dead when he returned.
Besides his son, Mr. Bergman is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Etta Hartnach, a brother, Charles Bergman, and a grandchild, all of Burlington.
Funeral services will be held in Prugh’s chapel tomorrow afternoon at 2 o’clock in charge of Rev. Nels Pearson, with burial in Aspen Grove Cemetery.
