Obituary

J.H. Berges, for fifty-three years a resident of Burlington, passed away last evening at the home of his daughter a mile north of Mediapolis. He left the city but a few weeks ago to visit. Ailments due to old age were the cause of death. The remains will be brought to Burlington and the funeral will be held Friday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the First German Evangelical Church.
The deceased was 78 years old. He came to Burlington from Germany in 1854 and resided here since. About the time of the civil war, he purchased a home at the corner of Corse and Gnahn streets and he resided there up to a short time ago. For twenty-three years he was a foreman in the employ of the Old Gas Company, but advancing age compelled him to lay aside active duties.
Surviving are the following children; HH Berges, JH Berges, Jr., Ed Berges, Mrs. Louisa Loose, Mrs. Len Swigert, and Mrs. Minnie Krueger. One brother, Rev. JD Berges of this city, and a sister, Mrs. Fredricka Hummell, of Peoria, are also living.
