Obituary
In 1956 Henry Benne came to Des Moines County, Iowa, and found this the land of opportunity. He worked hard, with his brain as well as with his hands, and was able to retire upon competence in 1894. He died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. William Flaar, near Mt. Union, Iowa, at midnight Sunday.
He was a native of Germany, born July 15, 1830, and came to this country when 21 years of age. At Lockport, NT he was married to Miss Marie Riepe, December 14, 1852, and on April 1, 1856, they came to Burlington locating on a farm in Benton township. He was a successful farmer and his farm was a mine of wealth. When the war between the states broke out he became a member of Co. G, of the Fourth Iowa. He held that the country that had been good to him, demanded all that he could do for it in return. He was wounded in the arm but served practically to the end of the war.
After the war, he returned to his farm, and in the course of time, he was chosen member of the board of supervisors where he served from 1886 to 1895. He had also held township offices.
Mr. Benne was a member of the German Lutheran church and displayed great interest in the work of that church.
He is survived by two sons, Edward of Burlington, Ia., and John of Milford, Neb., and two daughters, Mrs. William Flaar of Henry county, and Mrs. Lillie Morrettee of Washington, Iowa. Mrs. Hannah Geyer of the Union Hotel is a sister.
Mr. Benne was possessed of many sterling qualities and will be held in kindly remembrance by a great many relatives and friends.
The funeral services for Henry Benne will be held Thursday afternoon at 1:30 from the Burnett funeral parlors, and the G. A. R. will have charge of the services. Friends are invited to attend. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.
