George Benham, 217 Swan Street, West Burlington, died at the Mercy hospital at 11:45 today at the age of 77 years, after an illness of six weeks. He had been a patient at the hospital for nearly three weeks. Mr. Benham had been in the employ of the Burlington route as a foreman and master mechanic for 52 years, retiring about three years ago.
He was born in Massachusetts in May 1847. He enlisted in the Union forces at the age of 17 and saw active service in the civil war. He has been in Burlington since 1868. He was a member of the IOOF.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Ida Benham, one son George A. Benham, Long Beach, Cal.; one daughter, Mrs. C. Nightingale, Chicago, Ill.; one sister, Mrs. Emma Rogers, in California, and two sisters in Springfield, Mass. Several grandchildren also survive.
