Obituary
Mrs. Lydia Bender, colored, died yesterday morning at about 2 o’clock in the Mercy hospital. She was the wife of Major Bender, 1606 South 15th St., and had lived in Burlington for more than forty years. She came here with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Sanford Mitchell.
Mrs. Bender was born in Clark County, Mo., on July 10, 1858. Besides her husband, she leaves five sisters; Mrs. Julia Folks, Mrs. Nacy Miller, Mrs. Beatrice Johnson, Mrs. Sophia Bird, and Mrs. Sadie Haynes. She was a member of St. John’s AME church for thirty years and was one of its trustees. She was also affiliated with most of the colored organizations of Burlington.
Funeral services will be held Monday afternoon at 2 o’clock from Prugh’s chapel. Her pastor, Rev. MR Rhononee, will be assisted by Rev. JH Garrison of Keokuk, Rev. WW Williams of Clinton, and Rev. GE Green of the Union Baptist Church in Burlington.
