Mr. Herbert E. Stein, 73, a Burlington insurance man for more than half a century, died Thursday afternoon in Burlington hospital. He had continued active in the insurance field until he became ill Sept. 26. He died 22 years to the day after his brother, Theodore, with whom he had been a partner in the Stein Brothers agency of Connecticut Mutual Life Insurance Co. Mr. Herbert Stein was a past president of the Chamber of Commerce and Flint Hills club. He served on the Civil Service board and the board of Aspen Grove Cemetery association. He was a member of the Southeast Iowa Life Underwriters and Elks club. He was a World War I veteran. Mr. Stein had won numerous honors from the Connecticut Mutual Life company and he and his brother were top sales representatives for the entire company one year.He had received the National Association of Life Underwriters quality award 14 times. Connecticut Mutual Life honored Mr. Stein's service with the presentation of a medallion with gold bar and distinguished service scroll in December of 1961. He was born in Burlington, April 25, 1889, the son of Erich and Louise Brautigan Stein. He attended Burlington schools and entered the life insurance business on Dec. 21, 1911. After living briefly in Cedar Rapids, he returned to Burlington to join his brother in the local insurance agenct. On. Sept. 9. 1920, he married the former Mary Pearl Allen. Surviving are his wife; twin daughters, Mrs. John Riepe of Davenport and Mrs. David Steinle of Burlington; three sisters, Charlotte Stein of Burlington, Marian Stein and Mrs. Edward MacBride of Chicago and five grandchildren. His parents, his brother, and a siser, Mrs. Henry Weiling, are dead. Services will be Saturday at 3:30 p.m. in Wallen-Nelson Chapel. Dr. John D. Rose will officiate. Burial will be in Aspen Grove cemetery.
