Obituary

Frank J. (Pete) Beard, 78, of 2200 Williams, was dead on arrival at Burlington Medical Center at 11:30 pm Tuesday, April 27. A physician said death was due natural causes.
He was born Jan. 25, 1898, in Burlington, the son of Jacob S. and Clara VanLoon Beard. He served in the US Naval Reserve.
He married Fredabelle Good April 18, 1945, in Burlington.
Before retiring, he headed the sporting goods department of Waugh Bros. for many years and later worked for Hinesdley Detective Agency. He was widely known in outdoor circles and was a past secretary of National Rifle Assn. He was also a member of State Golden Hawks Hikers Assn., National Campers and Hikers Assn., Roamin’ Hawks of Burlington, and was a long-time secretary of Burlington Rifle club. He was a member of First Christian church and was a 56-year member of Des Moines Masonic lodge.
Surviving; The wife; two sons, Douglas, Springville, and Eugene, Ely; and daughter, Louise Crowl, Waterloo.
Funeral: 1:30 Friday, Prugh’s Chapel, Rev. John Vickers; Aspen Grove Cemetery. A memorial to First Christian church has been established.
