Obituary
Dr. Martin Carrillo, 90, of West Branch, died at 12:24 p.m. Friday, September 29, 2006, at Crestview Care and Rehab Center. Born April 8,1916, in Zulueta, Cuba, he was the son of Carios and Milagros Ugartemendia Carrillo. On November 5, 1949, he married Irma Blanco in Caibarien, Cuba. Martin graduated from the University of Havana Medical School in 1946 and worked as a family physician in Caibarien Cuba for 14 years. He immigrated to the United States in 1960 following the communist takeover in Cuba. He continued to practice medicine in the United States. He practiced in Chicago from 1960 to 1963, Dallas City, Ill., from 1963 to 1987 and in Burlington from 1969 to 1987. Dr. Carrillo was a medical staff member at the Carthage, Ill., Memorial Hospital and at the Burlington Medical Center. The Carrillo family lived in Dallas City from 1963 to 1969 and in Burlington from 1969 to 1997. The moved to Iowa City in 1997. Martin was grateful for the opportunity to bring his family to the United States and to raise his children in freedom. His passions included his family, medicine, chess, baseball, swimming, lively discussions about world affairs and his many dogs. He was a member of SS John and Paul Catholic Church. Survivors include his wife, of Iowa City; one son, Pedro (Stephany) Carrillo of Iowa City; one daughter, Mayra Carrillo (George) Daniel of Galesburg, Ill.; four grandchildren, Ani Daniel and Martin Daniel, and William Carrillo and Alex Carrillo; one sister, Hilda Carrillo of Miami, Florida; one brother, Enrique Carrillo; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Carlos Carrillo. The family will receive friends in Prugh's Chapel two hours prior to the service. The funeral service for Dr. Carrillo will be at 11 a.m. Friday, October 6,2006, at Prugh's Chapel, with the Rev. Fr. Patrick Hilgendorf officiating. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.
