Roy Albert Carpenter, 78, of Burlington, died at 11:15 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 28, 1999, at Burlington Medical Center. Born Feb. 22, 1921, at Albia, he was the son of Claude and Jennie Ademeit Carpenter. On Dec. 20, 1944, he married Martha May Sappington in Burlington. Mr. Carpenter was a Worldl War II Navy Veteran, serving as a carpenter's mate 3rd class on the USS Mullony and the USS Nevada. He owned and operated Carpenter's Confectionary with his wife from 1947 until 1982. He was a member of First Christian Church, the Eagles Club, and the American Legion. He was an avid bowler, and enjoyed fishing and woodworking. Survivors include his wife; one son, Larry Carpenter of Burlington; one daughter, Diane Carpenter of Burlington; three grandchildren; and two step-grand- children. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers. Visitation will begin at 8 a.m. Tuesday in Lunning Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. The funeral for Mr. Carpenter will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in Lunning Chapel, with Sister Marsha Baumert officiating. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. A memorial has been established.
