Charles W. Baumgartner, age 55, of 1417 Iowa St. died suddenly at his home at 6:30 Sunday morning, the result of a heart ailment. He had spent Saturday evening in the company of friends and apparently was in good health. He awoke about 5:30 Sunday morning, complaining of severe pains in the region of his heart, succumbing an hour later.
Mr. Baumgartner, who was commander of Phillip Ashley Crapo Camp No. 20 Spanish War Veterans, was born in Burlington June 29, 1879, and resided here practically all of his life. When the Spanish war broke out he was below the legal age of enlistment. Later, however, on Sept. 2, 1899, having attained his majority, he enlisted in the 39th Iowa volunteer infantry for service in the Phillippines, where he served until his regiment was mustered out.
Returning to the United States, Mr. Baumgartner was united in marriage with Miss Alma Brown Oct. 29, 1902. In addition to his wife, he leaves two children, Jack and Naomi, of Burlington; two grandchildren and one brother, Paul, of Waterloo, Ia. At the time of his death, Mr. Baumgartner was engaged as an extra bridge-tender on the McArthur Bridge.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Prugh’s Chapel, with burial in Aspen Grove cemetery. Spanish war veterans are requested to attend.
