Evelyn Mae Carter, 88, of LaHarpe, Ill., formerly of West Burlington, died at 1:55 p.m. Friday, Oct. 28, 2011, at the McDonough District Hospital in Macomb. Born June 9, 1923, in Durham, Ill., she was the daughter of Charles Conrad and Ora W. Lowe Rodeffer. On May 12, 1945, she married Norman Kingsley. They later divorced. She married James Milton Carter in 1972. He died in 1974. Mrs. Carter was a bookkeeper for Norm's Koestner Electric for many years. She was a 1941 graduate of Dallas High School, and attended Southeastern Community College where she completed classes in accounting. She enjoyed reading, cooking, playing cards, sewing, and making crafts. She made all of her own clothes, and traveled to craft shows. She was a former member of the ABWA, and volunteered for the SHARE program. Survivors include two granddaughters; eight great-grandchildren; three sisters, Wilma Jean Voigts of Dwight, Ill., Virginia Rich of LaHarpe, Ill., and Betty Olson of Carthage, Ill.; nieces and nephews. Besides her husbands she was preceded in death by her parents, a daughter, and four brothers. Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Hass-Thielen Funeral Home on Tuesday, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. The funeral service for Mrs. Carter will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Hass-Thielen Funeral Home, with the Rev. Bruce Goettsche officiating. A time of food and fellowship will be at the Hass-Thielen community room following the service. Cremation will be accorded following the funeral service. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery at a later date. A memorial has been established.
