William A. Card, prominent Burlington Route official and former well known Burlington resident, died suddenly at his home in LaGrange, Ill., Sunday noon. Mr. Card was born June 22, 1870. He entered service of the Burlington road as telegrapher at Aurora, Ill., September 10, 1887, when only 17 years old, and continued his association with the Burlington in various capacities until the time of his death. He was essentially a man from the ranks serving as clerk to the trainmaster at Aurora, as trainmaster, assistant superintendent, superintendent. On December 1, 1922, he was appointed superintendent of the Iowa lines with headquarters at Burlington, coming to this city from St. Joseph, Mo. He made his home in Burlington until May 1, 1931 when he was appointed assistant to the general manager with headquarters in Chicago, a position he held at the time of his death. Mr. Card was possessed with a happy disposition, and was endowed with the faculty of making many loyal friendships, both in the railroad service and among townspeople. He took active interest in all civic affairs, and was always willing to give liberally of his time and strength for the improvement of the community in which he lived. He was essentially a home-loving man, and was ever happiest when surrounded by his family and friends in his own home. Surviving are the widow, and one son, Charles, of Burlington; three brothers, Charles Card, of Aurora, Ill.; Harry Card, of La Grange, ill., and Edward Card, of St. Louis, and two sisters, Mrs. William Swartzberg, of Aurora, Ill., and Mrs. Hattie Snook, of Plaine FIeld, Ill. Short funeral services will be held at the late residence in La Grange, Ill., Tuesday morning. The funeral party will arrive in Burlington on train No. 9 Tuesday afternoon, and services will be held at the First Presbyterain church in this city at 4 o'clock Tuesday afternoon, with Dr. A. Cardle, pastor of the First Presbyterain church, where Mr. Card was a member and served as elder during his residence in Burlington, in charge. Interment will be in Aspen Grove cemetery. The body will be taken to the Burnett-Wallen funeral home on arrival here. Pallbearers will be George Swiler, Fred Fear, T.W. Pixley,W.F. Gilman, W.H. Plock and E.G. Disque.
