Obituary
Frank Canny, seven times elected to the Burlington city council as commissioner of finance, died Sunday at 10:30 p.m. at his home, 307 South Garfield avenue. Death resulted from heart trouble which had confined him to his home, and for a greater part of the time to bed, since May 14. With the city administration building closed and officials acting as pall bearers, funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at 9 a.m. from St. Patrick's Catholic church. Burial will be in Aspen Grove cemetery. The pall bearers will be Mayor E.G. Marquardt, Henry Wegener, Charles Wagner, Charles McElroy, F.S. Holsteen and Theodore Schafer, honorary, and F.A. Haskell, H.A. Vollmer, Robert Schlampp, George Bruhl, Warren Kehn and Ed Weinstein, active.
During the last few days little hope was held for his recovery and his condition weakened rapidly. Elected to the finance office when the commission plan of government was established in Burlington in 1910, Mr. Canny became one of the best known city officials in the state and his department was frequently commended by state officials for the efficient manner in which the office and records were handled. During the war he was in charge of the apportionment of coal in the city and in administering the duties of this office he also drew praise from officials for his fair treatment and judgement. At the close of his first term in office under Mayor W.C. Cross, Mr. Canny again entered the race for the same office and was re-elected with Frank C. Norton as mayor. In 1914 he was a candidate for mayor, but was defeated and regained his position on the council in1916. He was re-elected for three succeeding terms, the first two being under Mayor James M. Bell and the last two with Mayor Thomas J. Smith. In 1924 he was defeated by Ernest L. Hudgel and also lost the race in 1926, but was returned last year by a large vote. Mr. Canny was a native of Burlington and performed his duties always with the best interests of the city in mind. He was born June 4, 1868 and was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Canny. After attending St.Patrick's school he learned the upholsterers trade and followed that line of work for a number of years. Later he engaged in the grocery business with his brother, but left that when elected to the council the first time. He was connected with a broom manufacturing concern and other interests in the years between his terms of office. He was married to Theresa Tiedemann in 1917, and she with three brothers, Thomas Canny, E.J. Canny and William H. Canny, survives. he was a member of the Hawkeye Natives association. The tax plan and assessment schedule now in use, and considered the best and most efficient in the state were adopted during Mr. Canny's second term in office. He was scheduled to speak last week at the session of the League of Iowa Muncipalities at Ft. Dodge, but his health would not permit. Their high esteem and sincere sympathy for him prompted members of the league to send their wishes for his recovery by telegram.
