Marion John Bates, a 70-year-old retired landscape contractor, died at 3 am Sunday in his home at 1204 Pond street.
He was born Nov. 19, 1881, in Burlington, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Ellie Bates, and was married to the former Lucy Morgan in May 1904 in Ft. Madison. Bates was a life resident of Burlington.
Surviving are his widow, 2 sons, Capt. Ralph Bates and Lee Bates, both of the US Navy; 2 sisters, Mrs. Grace McDonald, Burlington, and Clara Bates, Wisconsin Rapids, Wis; and a grandchild.
The body is at Giles Funeral home. Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at 1:30 at the Giles Funeral Home. Rev. RG Beck will officiate. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.
