Obituary
A most painful and afflicting occurrence took place about five miles from this city on Monday last. Mr. James Cameron, one of our oldest and most respected citizens ended his days in a most distressing manner. He left his family, stating he would soon be back, and proceeded to a neighbor's where he loaned a gun and requested a neighbor to load it well. He then departed, and the last that was seen of him, was in the road between his residence and Mr. Gearhart's. The family became alarmed in consequence of his absence and much more so, towards evening, when his horse returned home without a bridle. The neighbors now commenced a search and family found him in a thicket about 400 yards from the house, lying in a ravine dead. His coat and powder horn were hanging on a tree a few yards distant, The gun was within a few feet of him, the muzzle pointing towards him. He was in a reclining position upon his knees and feet, his head reposing on the side of the ravine, his face being towards the bank, and one hand placed on the bullet wound. A coroner's inquest was held, and the following verdict rendered:-"That the deceased came to his death by shooting himself in his left breast." This mournful dispensation has cast great gloom over the community and excited much sympathy for the afflicted relations of the deceased. Various reasons are assigned as the cause, among which the most probable is, pecuniary difficulties. Mr. C. was one of the early settlers of this County and held the office of Sheriff for six years. He was very popular and much beloved. He was very cheerful and affable, but subject to periods of dejection. He was a native of Kentucky.
