Obituary
Clara Bates, 76, a former Burlington resident, was murdered in her home near Wisconsin Rapids, Wiz., Sunday night according to word received here.
Details of her death have not been received by relatives in Burlington, but it was reported she was beaten to death. She reportedly operated a tavern about 7 miles from Wisconsin Rapids and had living quarters in the same building. The body will be brought here for services and burial.
Miss Bates was born in Burlington Dec. 27, 1875, the daughter of Eli and Mary Morrow Bates. She had lived in Wisconsin Rapids for years.
Survivors include a brother, William, of Wisconsin Rapids; a sister, Mrs. Grace McDonald, 1217 Gnahn, Burlington; 3 nephews and a niece, Lee E. Bates, electrician’s mate second class stationed at the local naval reserve center; Capt. Ralph Bates USN, Bainbridge, Md.; Robert Ford and Goldie Ford, both of Edwardsville, Kan.
The body will arrive in Burlington Saturday morning and be taken to Prugh’s chapel. Graveside services will be held Saturday at 2 pm in Aspen Grove Cemetery.
