Obituary
At half-past five o'clock last evening George Adams Calloway, an Iowa pioneer, passed to his eternal rest. Death came to him at the home of his son, Mr. George G. Calloway, No.508 North street. Life slipped away easily and quietly and though his sudden demise was not expected, it was known that in view of his age such might occur at any time. Mr. Calloway was one of the pioneers of Iowa and an early settler of this county. He was a native of Virginia, where he spent the early years of his life, coming to the Hawkeye state in 1842. He located afirst at Dodgeville, and at once earned for himself the reputation for honesty and stalwartness of intergrity which prompted his fellow citizens to place him in several positions of public trust. At the inception of the civil war he moved to the Orchard City and purchased the John C. Greiner grocery interests. Here he also took an active interest in public affairs. He was a democrat by politics, was many times delegate to conventions, and at one time presided over a democratic state convention held at Dubuque. Of late years he had taken no active part in public affairs, though always maintaining a lively interest in whatever was going on in political and public circles. His wife died about ten years ago. There are but two living children of a family of six, to survive their father: Mrs. Louis Tiemann and George G. Calloway, of this city. The passing away of the old pioneer will occassion a pang of regret in the hearts of very many friends of the family. The funeral service will take place tomorrow afternoon at 2:30 o'clock from the family residence.
