M.B. Calkins, 85 years old and one of Burlington's honored pioneer residents, died yesterday morning at 7 o'clock at his home, 1115 Spring street, following a long illness. His hip was dislocated when he fell several months ago, and due to his already, frail body and advanced age, his life gradually ebbed away after many weeks of suffering which he endured with patience and fortitude. Mr. Calkins was a true lover of nature, especially interested in hoticulture. After long and patient study and years of care of his nursery and fruit farm west of the city, he became an authority of horticultural matters. Twenty-five or thirty years ago, he was obliged to retire on account of failing health and soon after entered the real estate business. he gradually built up a good business which he followed until forced to permanently retire from active life because of illness and advancing years. Mr. Calkins was a veteran of the civil war. As a young man of 22 years, he enlisted in the service of his country at Burlington on October10, 1861, with Company K. Fourteenth Iowa Infantry, was mustered in on November 16, 1891, and was discharged on February 6, 1863. A soldier who enduring many hardships, he was in the battle of Shiloh and was a member of the "Hornet's Nest Brigade." He was a devoted member of the Congregational church. Millard Boise Calkins was born in Seward, N.Y., March 8, 1838, of Revolutionary ancestors, being a great grandson of Elijah Calkins, who served in the Revolutionary army. He was married on October 9, 1864, to Miss Serena Seamans of Burlington. He leaves a widow and two daughters, Mrs. Anna Knight of Mt. Pleasant and Kate L. Calkins, of Burlington, besides eight grandchildren, Three children preceded him in death: Edwin M. Calkins of Burlington, Mrs. Ella L. Ludwig of Arlington, Neb., and Leroy Calkins of St. Louis, Mo. Funeral services will be held from the family home, 1115 Spring street, Friday morning at 10 o'clock.
