Charles H. Barton, 61, former Burlington businessman, died suddenly at his home in Roscoe, Ia., early Sunday morning. He had been in failing health for more than a year. Well-known in Burlington, he visited relatives here often after closing out the Barton Overland Company which he operated here several years.
The operator of a general merchandise store and elevator in Roscoe, he was a postmaster there for 37 years and served as vice president of the Roscoe Farmers Savings Bank.
The son of Joseph and Verlina Barton, Charles Hobert Barton was born on a farm near Franklin Mills, Ia., June 30, 1881, and later moved to a farm near Roscoe, which was his home until he married. He attended rural schools and Elliott’s business college in Burlington. Barton was a member of the Methodist church in Yarmouth.
On Sept 9, 1903, he married Louise Helen Kurz, who preceded him in death March 10, 1940. To this union were born the following children, all of whom survive; Mrs. Frances Wire, Burlington; Surrell, Mediapolis; Mrs. Dorothy Percy, La Grange, Ill.; Margaret, Hawarden, Ia., Mrs. Julia Hess, Chicago; Mildred Louise, and Joseph at home. Also surviving are two grandchildren and the following brothers and sisters: Edward in California; Mrs. CE Thomas, Chicago; Julia Gabeline, Burlington; Lulu Houseman, Sperry, and Mark of Roscoe. One brother and a sister preceded him in death.
Funeral services will be conducted in Prugh’s Chapel Tuesday afternoon at 2 o’clock with burial in Aspen Grove Cemetery.
