Martha Ann Aery, 88, of Burlington, died Monday, September 24, 2007 at Burlington Care Center. Born December 16, 1918 in Bloomfield, Iowa, she was the daughter of Millard Elmer and Grace Hummel Standard. On January 15, 1947, she married Louis Wesley Aery Jr. in Las Vegas, Nevada. He died jUne 23, 1998. Martha was a teacher, bookkeeper and claims file clerk. She was a member of West Burlington United Methodist Church. She was a voulnteer Red Cross Nurse's Aid and volunteered in nursing homes. She served in the United States Coast Guard during World War II as a storekeeper and clerk. She enjoyed needlework, sewing and knitting. She knitted teddy bears and donated them to the hospitals, fire and police departments and needy children. Family was most important to her. Her favorite things to do were reading adventure stories, puzzle books, western novels and history novels. She especially enjoyed local history. Survivors include nieces and nephews; great nieces and nephews and great great nieces and nephews; two sisters-in-law, Betty Standard of Benson, Arizona and Dorothy Standard of Burlington, Iowa. She was preceded in death by her husband; two brothers, James and Richard Standard; and one sister Betty Hargrove. Rev. Jackie Bradford will officiate, with full graveside military rites conducted by the Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard in Aspen Grove Cemetery. A memorial has been established for the West Burlington United Methodist Church.
