Obituary
Mr. Gus Andrew Astfalk, 84, of 1317 Brick, died in St. Francis hospital at 2:35 p.m. Sunday. A native of Germany, Mr. Astfalk was born March 13, 1879. He came to the United States as a youth and on Oct. 15, 1903, in Burlington, was married to Rose Marie Heins. She died in 1916. On Feb. 18, 1931, Mr. Astfalk was married to Jennie Bowman Julius, who died in 1957. A retired pattern-maker, Mr. Astfalk was employed by Murray Iron Works for 55 years. He was a member of First United Church of Christ, the Fraternal Order of Eagles, the International Molders and Foundry Workers Union and for many years was a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. Surviving are two sons and four daughters: Milton Astfalk, 1710 Lincoln; Mrs. Flora Peterson, 316 Shields; Mrs. Peggy Graham, 1419 N. Eighth; Mrs. Delphina Williford, Rock Island, Ill.; and Mrs. Marie White, of Mabel, Minn. Also surviving are three sisters, all living in Reuttingen, Germany: Mrs. Klara Bohenset and Emma and Emily Astfalk, and 13 grandchildren, seven great-grand children; 11 step-grandchildren, and 17 step-great-grandchildren. Stepchildren surviving are Mrs.Alice Bomer, Glenwood, Louis Julius, Moline, Ill.; Mrs. Bessie Beardsley, Carman, Ill., and Mrs. Helen Steger, Alpine, Calif. A brother died previously. Last rites will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Elliott-Lunning Chapel. The rev. Donald V. Klohr, pastor of First United Church of Christ, will officiate. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.
