Carlton William Callison, 86, of Burlington died Tuesday, July 3, 2007, at Great River Medical Center Klein Center. Born Jan. 25, 1921, in Newtown, Mo., he was son of Carl George and Barbara Godfrey Callison. On July 20, 1946, he married Norma Jean Beary in Hiawatha, Kan. She preceded him in death. Mr. Callison taught in rural schools and coached several sports. In 1952, he moved to Winterset and was elementary and junior high school principal. In 1966, he took the position of Dean of Keokuk Community College. In 1967, he became president of Southeastern Community College, where he retired in 1986. Mr. Callison served in the Army, 96th Infantry Division, during World War II. He achieved the rank of sergeant first class. He was a graduate of Powersville High School, Powersville, Mo. He earned his bachelor's and master's degrees from Northeast Missouri State Teachers College. He did additional graduate work at Drake University and was awarded an honorary doctorate degree from Iowa Wesleyan University. He served on the Iowa State Board of Education for nine years. He chaired the Community College Council for four years and served on the Prison Industries Advisory Board for two years. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping. Survivors include three sons, Gary Callison of Cedar Rapids, and Bruce Callison and Bradley Callison, both of Burlington; one daughter, Barbara Frank of Dover, N.H.; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents and one foster brother. Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Lunning Chapel, with family receiving friends from 6 to 8 p.m. The funeral for Mr. Callison will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Lunning Chapel, with the Rev. Charles Downing officiating. Burial with full military rites will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. A memorial has been established for the Southeastern Community College Scholarship Fund.
