Mrs. William Ashby, colored matron at Union depot until recently died at her home, 612 South Ninth street yesterday afternoon on her 60th birthday anniversary. Death was due to a stroke of apoplexy suffered when she fell on the church steps at Wever Tuesday night. Mrs. Ashby, whose maiden name was Eliza Morris, was born in Illinois, March 2, 1873, the daughter of George and Clarissa Carter Morris. her marriage to Mr. Ashby took place August 7, 1890, and the couple had lived in Burlington for the past 19 years. She was a member of African Methodist Episcopal church and was active in church work. Employed at the depot for several years she was known to many Burlington persons. Besides her husband she is survived by an adopted daughter, Mrs. Clara Cousins of Chicago: three sisters, Mrs. Josephine Pueckett of Chicago, Mrs. Amanda Taylor of Gary, Ind., and Mrs. Greta Douglas of Michigan; one brother, William Morris of Hondo, Calif., and one granddaughter. The body was taken to Prugh's chapel where it will remain until funeral arrangements can be completed.
