Robert Wood, Age 84, of Marathon, Iowa, died June 10, 2010, at the Pleasant View Home in Albert City, Iowa. Funeral services will be held on Monday, June 14, 2010, at 2:30 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Marathon. Visitatin will take place on Sunday, June 13, 2010, from 5-8:00 p.m. at the Sliefert Funeral Home in Albert City. Burial will be at a later date. Robert William Wood, the son of Frank and Gladys (Grupe) Wood, was born in Burlington, Iowa, on July 4, 1925. He attended and graduated from school in Burlington, Iowa. During World War II, Robert proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific. On March 31, 1948, Robert was united in marriage to Donna Houck in Burlington. This union was blessed with nine children, Gail, Robbin, Jane, Scott, Teresa, Tim, Joann, Andy, and Alyce. Robert raised his family and worked at CB&Q and in manufacturing. He was employed for years at JI Case in Burlington. As an adult, Robert attended college where he attained degrees in Horticulture and Farm Management, where he graduated with honors. Over the years, Robert was active in his community involved with the Kid Garden Club, Fish Youth Group and Park Board in Marathon. His hobbies included fishing, gardening, hunting, trapping, and woodworking. Robert was well known for making wood candle holders, and was often referred to as "Mr. Doughnut Man". Those left to cherish Robert's memory are his wife of 62 years, Donna Wood of Marathon; nine children: (Gail (Rex) Heckert of Peterson, Iowa; Robbin (Ron) Nissen of Marathon; Jane (Larry) Heckert of Hazleton, Iowa; Scott Wood of Burlington, Iowa; Teresa (Dennis) Fitzgerald of Clear Lake, Iowa; Tim (Sharon) Wood of Boone, Iowa; Joann Huegerich of Laurens, Iowa; Andy (Anne) Wood of Circle Pines, Minnesota; Alyce (Neville) Buffin of Hazlet, New Jersey; 23 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; two sisters: Virginia Kluska and Marilu (Gerald) Kuhl; sister-in-law, Anne (Dean) Houck; brother-in-law, Gregg (Mary) Houck; nieces, nephews; extended family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers-in-law; one niece; one nephew; and one grandson.
