Charles Armknecht , one of Burlington's best known business men passed away suddenly at 4:30 o'clock Sunday afternoon at the Burlington hospital where he had been a patient only a few hours. Mr. Armknecht was born in Germany. Coming to the United States when a boy he entered the employ of the J.S. Schramm company when only 14 years old and has remained continuously associated with this well known firm until at the present time, being perhaps the oldest man in point of service with a single concern in the city.At the time of his death he was a partner in the concern, being comptroller, a position corresponding to secretary and treasurer.He was truly a home loving man and was ever happiest when surrounded by a circle of friends. He possessed a keen sense of humor was most solicitous as to the welfare of others and was most sympathetic and generous. Mr. Armknecht was possessed of a personality which radiated a bouant kindliness and fellowship. It made him admirable and lovable and lent a charm which accentuated the esteem of his friends and acquaintances. Always interested in the welfare of his home city he gave generously of his time and effort in promoting civic affairs. On Feb. 13, 1899, he was elected a member of the board of directors of the Burlington hospital and the following year he was named treasurer, a position he held at the time of his death. He was also a director of the Tri-State Fair association, and a member of the First Presbyterian church, Burlington Golf club and the Elks club. Ever faithful to his business trust he was at his desk as usual all day Saturday. Coming home after closing hours that night he complained of not feeling well. He was taken to Burlington hospital Sunday noon and passed away a few hours later. Mr Armknecht is survived by his widow, who was formerly Miss Elda Ilick; a nephew, E.P. Armknecht, of Donnellson, Ia., and three nieces. Funeral services will be at the home, 705 North Eighth street at 4 o'clock Tuesday afternoon with the Rev. Dr. A. Cardle officiating. Interment will be in Aspen Grove.
