Despondent over continued ill health Mrs. Maybelle Appel, 33, 2116 South Third street, took her own life by ingaling gas in the basement of her home at about 3:30 yesterday afternoon. The woman was found by her husband, Walter V. Appel, when he returned from work shortly after 4 o'clock. An inhalator squad from the city fire department was called at once and worked over the body for nearly two hours without avail. The family physician was also called. Death occurred at approximately 3:30, Coroner B.A> Prugh, who investigated said. Mrs. Appel ended her life by sticking a piece of gas hose in her mouth and inhaling the gas. Everything possible was done in an effort to bring the woman back to life, Coroner Purgh said in commenting on the work of firemen.While Mrs. Appel was apparently in good spirits yesterday morning, she had been in ill health for a long time, relatives said last night.She is known to have been despondent over her condition recently. Surviving are her husband, who is employed as a sign painter at the Sowden Sign shop; a three-year-old daughter, Lois; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Tobias Hermann of 209 South Eighth street; one sister, Mrs. Robert Harding of West Baldwin, Me., and one brother, T.A. Hermann of Burlington. Mrs. Appel was a life resident of Burlington and a member of the Presbyterian church. She was born Aug. 9, 1897. She and Mr. Appel were married hereJune 27, 1922. The body was taken to Prugh's chapel. Funeral arrangements had not been completed late last night.
Funeral services for Mrs. Walter Appel, 33, will be held at Prugh's chapel at 2 p.m. today. Burial will be in Aspen Grove cemetery. Mrs. Appel, who had been in ill health for some time, took her life by inhaling gas at her home, 2116 South Third street, Friday afternoon. A life resident of Burlington, Mrs. Appel was sell known in the community. Her husband, a three year old daughter, her parents, one sister and one brother survive. Friends are invited to the last rites this afternoon.
