Obituary
Mrs. Hannah M. (Bell) Barker, wife of Charles I. Barker, died in Chicago, Ill., suddenly, September 3, 1898. She was born in Urbana, Ohio Feb. 10, 1837, and was the daughter of Daniel S. Bell a prominent lawyer of that place, and Julia Corwin Bell. She was married in Hamilton, Ohio, February 19, 1856, to Charles I. Barker, editor at that time of the Hamilton Telegraph. In 1867, they moved to Burlington, Iowa and have made their home there since.
Mrs. Barker was a lady of broad, comprehensive character and beloved for her womanly qualities. Her many deeds of kindness and always helping hand were among her main characteristics. Everyone who knew her loved and respected her and her long residence in this city had endeared her to a large circle of friends. She was an affectionate, indulgent mother and loving wife.
Mrs. Barker was the mother of four children, the oldest and youngest being boys and died in infancy. Two daughters, Bell Corwin and Abbie Florence, with her husband, survive her, and their home being thus suddenly made desolate by her death overwhelms the family with grief, in which they have the sincere sympathy of a large number of friends. Mrs. Barker was one of the charter members of the Starts and Stripes chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
The body arrived here yesterday morning and was placed in the receiving vault at Aspen Grove cemetery.
Funeral services, conducted by Rev. Dr. Salter, of the Congregational church, will be held at the chapel in Aspen Grove, this forenoon at eleven o’clock.
