Obituary
Bert A. Butcher, 80, of Burlington, died Saturday, August 27, 2011, at his home. Born Nov. 5, 1930, in Bloomington, Ind., he was the son of Bert Arthur and Hazel Wilma Kirkpatrick Butcher. On June 14, 1959, he married Karen Louise Moore in Thornburg. Mr. Butcher distributed the Des Moines Register for 30 years, retiring in 1992. He graduated from Olds High School in 1948, and served in the National Guard. He was a member of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and Moose Lodge, and former member of Burlington Evening Lions. He enjoyed fishing, horses, dogs, antiques, gardening, yard work, trips to Arizona and family. Survivors include his wife; one son, Jim Butcher of West Lafayette, Ind.; one daughter, Terri Butcher-Lee of Burlington; two grandchildren; three brothers, Bill Butcher of Mount Pleasant, Mike Butcher of Salem, and Steve Butcher of Rogers, Ark.; five sisters, Charlotte King and Betty Maddox, both of Mount Pleasant, Jean Bartmann of Washington, Patti Weller of Iowa City, and Pam Shinstock of Salem; nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, and one sister. Visitation will be from 1 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Hass-Thielen Funeral Home in Burlington, where family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. The funeral for Mr. Butcher will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), with the Rev. D. Dean Benton officiating. A time of food and fellowship will be at First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) following the service. The body will be cremated following the funeral. Private burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. Memorials have been established for Des Moines County Humane Society and First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).
