Victor W. Busse, 89, of Burlington, died at 6:30 PM Wednesday, July 12, 2017, at the Danville Care Center in Danville.
Born September 19, 1927, in Burlington, he was the son of Albert William and Myrtle Westerbeck Busse. On February 15, 1953, he married Sylvia Phyllis Holsteen at the First United Church of Christ in Burlington. She died January 30, 2017.
Victor was a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service for 34 years, retiring in 1983.
He graduated from Burlington High School in 1945 and then went on to graduate from Burlington Junior College.
Victor served 19 months in the 349th Infantry Regiment of the 88th Division of the United States Army in northern Italy in 1946. In 1982 he was able to go back to all the places in Italy he was stationed and it was one of the highlights of his life.
He was a member of First United Church of Christ where he served on numerous committees and was chairman of the elders. He was a past member of Black Hawk Auto Restorers and the IA/IL Amateur Radio Club (HAM Radio), and a member of the Golden Oldies. He was active in Boy Scouts with his sons and served as a committee chairman. He restored a Model A Coupe with his sons while they where teenagers and the car is still in the family. He also enjoyed woodworking, photography, traveling, but most of all, he enjoyed doing things with his family.
Survivors include three sons, Steven Victor (Patricia) Busse of Burlington, Thomas Albert Busse of Quincy, Dwain Allen (Debra) Busse of Danville; six grandchildren, Erin (Shamus) Wells, Paula Busse, Andrew (Brianna) Busse, Sarah (Austin) Davis, Tyler (Brandy) Busse, and Emily Busse; two great-grandchildren, Reese Wells and Lane Wells; one sister, Anita Busse of Burlington; and several nieces and nephews.
Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, and one sister, Marilyn Lucas.
Visitation will be from noon until 7:00 PM with the family to receive friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM Tuesday, July 18, 2017 at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home.
The funeral service for Mr. Busse will be 10:00 AM Wednesday, July 19, 2017, at First United Church of Christ with Pastor JudyAnn Morse officiating. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. Full military honors will be rendered by the Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard. A time of food and fellowship will be held at First United Church of Christ following the burial.
