Dorothy Elizabeth Achsah Eads Klaus, 102, of Burlington, died Sunday, April 17, 2011, at New London Nursing and Rehab Center in New London. Born March 4, 1909, in Monmouth, she was the daughter of Harvey and May Elizabeth Fordney Eads. On July 15, 1939, she married Harold W. Klaus in Kahoka, Missouri. Harold made his living as a painter and foreman for Burlington Northern Railroad Shops. He preceded her in death on August 5, 1990. Mrs. Klaus was a graduate of Burlington High School and Burlington Junior College. She earned her B.A. Degree from Iowa Wesleyan College in Mount Pleasant. Mrs. Klaus taught two years in the Burlington Business College, and several years in the Des Moines County rural schools. She taught at elementary and high school levels for a total of 40 years, the last 25 years being in the Burlington School System. During her teaching career, she also taught at schools in Pinney Woods, Sherman, Buena Vista, Sperry, and Wapello. She was principal and taught in Leland, Iowa. Mrs. Klaus was a longtime member of Parkside First Baptist Church of Burlington, White Shrine of Jerusalem, E.C. Blackmar #545 O.E.S., Retired Teachers of Iowa, and Des Moines County Retired School Personnel. She was also a member of Alpha Delta Kappa Sorority, Daughters of American Revolution (D.A.R.), Good Hope Rebekah Lodge, Prime Time in West Burlington, and founding member of Mount Pleasant Christian School. Mrs. Klaus enjoyed dancing, and eating out with family and friends. She was survived by many nieces and nephews; and loved and respected by hundreds of former students whose lives she has touched. Friends may call from 12:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, April 19th, in Lunning Chapel. The funeral service for Mrs. Klaus will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 20th, in Lunning Chapel. The Rev. Tyrone Henderson will officiate. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. A memorial has been established.
