William Sylvester Burtalo, 79, of Burlington, died at 11:29 a.m. Wednesday, May 4, 2011, at Great River Medical Center in West Burlington. Born June 26, 1931, in Burlington, he was the son of William Leroy and Edith Baker Burtalo. On December 13, 1948, he married Joyce Schindall in Burlington. Mr. Burtalo worked 18 ½ years in maintenance for Sylvania, and 20 years with hoists at Case Co., retiring in 1990. He was a member of UAW No. 807. He enjoyed being around children and dogs, especially basset hounds. He also enjoyed traveling, fishing, camping, attending auctions and flea markets, and time with family. Survivors include his wife; one son, Terry "Bob" Burtalo of Colusa, Ill.; two daughters, Diana Phillips and Janet Reighard, both of Burlington; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchilden; and one sister, Dolly Phillips of Burlington. He was preceded in death by one daughter, one grandchild, his parents, two brothers, two sisters, one in infancy, and two half-sisters. Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Lunning Chapel in Burlington, where family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. The funeral for Mr. Burtalo will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Lunning Chapel, with Alan Ourth officiating. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery in Burlington. A memorial has been established for Special Needs Foundation.
