Obituary
John W. Ballard, son of the late John Ballard, who at one time was the county treasurer, passed away at his home on Marietta street at 2 o’clock this afternoon. His condition has been dangerous for the past two days, and when the end came there was gathered at his bedside a loving mother, and devoted sisters and brothers. For the past year, his health had been wretched and he spent the greater part of last year in Colorado hoping to obtain relief but to no avail. About a month ago he came home. Physicians saw that further stay in that climate would avail him nothing, and as a result, he left. His last days were made a bright and cheerful as the circumstances would permit and the afflicted one was resigned to his fate.
John Ballard was a splendid type of American boy. He was born in Des Moines County a few miles north of Burlington in 1876 about twenty-six years ago and spent most of his life here. He attended West Hill School. He was at one time engaged in the grocery business on South Hill and later employed by the Drake Hardware Co.
He is survived by the mother, Mrs. John Ballard; his aged grandmother, Mrs. Wm. Orndorff; three sisters, Mrs. Horace Miller, Mrs. Circe Allen, and Mrs. Herbert Roberts, and two brothers, William and Homer Ballard.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday morning at 10:30 am at the family residence, 115 Marietta Street.
