William E. Alter, 80, of Burlington, died at 9:40 a.m. Sunday, June 12, 2005, at Great River Medical Center, Klein Center.
Born June 19, 1924 in Mount Pleasant, he was the son of Ralph E. and Virginia E. Lee Alter. On Nov. 27, 1946, he married Norma J. Wilson. She died Oct 30, 2003.
Mr. Alter was a superintendent and carpenter for Carl A. Nelson Co.
He was a member of First United Methodist Church and served as a private in the Marines during WWII. He was a member of Des Moines Lodge No. 1 (Masons), 50-year member, 32nd degree of the Masons, E.C. Blackmar of Eastern Star, Advisory Board of the rainbow girls, Preservation Fund Committee of the church and the Temple and was Rainbow Dad for 22 years.
Survivors include two daughters, Nancy Lekin of Cedar Rapids and Jacqueline Plath of West Burlington; two sons, William Alter Jr. and Mark Alter, both of Burlington; 10 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by two brothers.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at First United Methodist Church, where the family will receive friends. A Masonic service will be at 7 p.m.
The funeral for Mr. Alter will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at First United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Dennis Tevis officiating. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.
A memorial has been established for First United Methodist Church Building Preservation Fund and Masonic Temple.
