James C. (Jim) Allender, veteran traveling man of Burlington, and a well-known resident of this city for thirty-five years, died this afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at his home, No. 1414 Madison avenue. He had been in failing health for three years, but his condition did not become alarmingly serious until Wednesday of this week.
"Jim" Allender numbered his friends by the hundreds, not only in this city but in the wide range of territory he traveled while selling goods on the road. Of an even, sunny disposition, he ever had a pleasant word an smile an din the neighborhood along Tenth street, where he lived for many years, his approach could always be noted, as he was humming a little tune. He loved children and was the soul of kindness and good nature. In the home circle he was ever thoughtful adn affectionate, and it is there he will be irreparably missed.
James Carver Allender was born January 22, 1859 on a farm newar Fremont, IA, the son of Nicholas B. and Martha Allender, and he spent virtually his entire life in Iowa. He received his education in the rural schools an the grades of Fremont, leaving his home community when about eighteen years of age. His first business training was in Ottumwas, IA and his traveling headquarters were maintained in the Packer City for some little time.
Thirty-five years ago he came to Burlington and started the first chop house in this city. It was known as "Allender's Chop House" and was successful. Later he again went on the road as a traveling salesman and has served in that capacity with serveral firms.
Ill-health forced him to abandon regular work three years ago but more recently his health seemed to improve and there were fond hopes that he would continue active for many years. Last Wednesday, however, he became seriously ill while at dinner in his home and was stricken that evening. He has been in a state of coma since Thursday and peacefully passed away at 2:30 this afternoon.
He is survived by his widow and two daughters Agnes M. Allender of Pittsburgh, PA and Jessie Allender of Ft. Madison, IA. Agnes returned home last evening and Jessie arrived home this afternoon. Also surviving are four brothers, Joe of Hooker, Okla; Charles and Lor of Oskaloosa, IA and Ephran of Marseilles, Il.
Mr. Allender was a member of the Hawkeye Natives, the Odd Fellows Lodge of Burlington, the Elks, Eagles and of the Traveler's Protective Association and the United Commercial Travelers. He also was a charter member of the Carthage Lake Club. Funeral arrangements have not been made but it is probable that the remains will be taken to Fremont for burial.
