Obituary
John Bailey, a well-known character about town and old riverman, died Saturday afternoon at his home 700 South Main Street. He was about 50 years of age and has spent most of his life in this locality, following the vocation of steamboat cook. For several years past he has been the faithful and regular surveyor and marker of the roadway across the ice each time the river froze over and in the performance of which frequently hazardous duty he became locally celebrated. He died of dropsy, a condition of long-standing. He was the brother of the riverman, Captain Amos Bailey, and is survived by a wife and six children.
