Obituary
Dr. Horton Bailey was born in Greenwich, NY., January 29, 1825. He came to Burlington in 1855. He was married Sept. 10, 1856, to Miss Ann E. Carpenter, her death occurring Feb. 23, 1873. On Feb 18, 1875, he was united in marriage a second time to Miss Elizabeth Kelley.
The children by the first marriage are Mrs. Hector Ballenden and Mrs. C.M. Levey, of this city; Miss Mayme Bailey, a teacher in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and Horton Bailey, Jr., merchant Osceola, Iowa. The second wife and two sons, Ralph and Winfield, constitute the second family, and with the children of the first marriage, survive his decease. He also leaves two sisters, Mrs. Hutton, or Greenwich, New York, and Mrs. B. Perrine, of Doon, Canada, as well as a number of nephews, children of a deceased brother, living in Riverside and Diagonal, Iowa.
Dr. Horton was a dentist by profession having graduated from a dental college in Philadelphia. He was among the first of his profession in Burlington. Later he embarked in the furniture business and opened a store on Main street next to the Hawkeye office. Selling out again he went back to his profession, reigning that to become a member of the Embalming Burial Case Co., of which firm he was president.
He was an ardent and zealous Mason and was a constant attendant and participator in all affairs pertaining to the order. He held high office in all the Masonic bodies and a still higher place in the hearts of his fraters, by whom he was universally loved and respected.
He was also a member of the Kaaba Temple, Nobles of the Mystic Shrine, of Davenport, Iowa.
The funeral will be held Wednesday morning from the residence 810 North 6th street at 10 am. St. Omer Commandery, Knights Templars are in charge.
