Irene Burcham, 93, formerly of Burlington, Iowa, died at Cass Regional Medical Center, Harrisonville, MO, on Wednesday, March 20, 2013. She had been a resident of Crown Care Center in Harrisonville. Born on November 18, 1919, in Queen City, Missouri, she was the daughter of Grover Whitworth and Buena Vista Dole Whitworth. Losing her mother in 1920, Irene was raised by grandparents, Mary and Sebastian Dole, moving to Iowa in 1930. She graduated from Burlington High School in 1937 and married Wendell G. Burcham on June 19, 1937. Wendell died June 7, 1998.
Irene was a homemaker and also worked as a sales clerk at the J.S. Schramm Co. for 25 years. She enjoyed cooking, camping, needlecrafts, shopping, and dogs, but most of all she loved spending time with her family. She was a member of Parkside First Baptist Church in Burlington and First Christian Church in Grandview, MO. She had lived in the greater Kansas City area for the last 16 years.
She is survived by two sons, Wayne (Joe) Burcham-Gulotta of Boonton, NJ and Dennis (Claudia) Burcham of Benbrook, TX and two daughters, Carolyn (Larry) Dick of George West, TX and Nancy (Art) Southard of Cleveland, MO, thirteen grandchildren, seventeen great grandchildren, four great-great grandchildren, 5 step-great grandchildren, 10 step-great-great grandchildren, one sister, Norene Ryder, of Pasco, Washington, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one grandson, Kevin Burcham; one great grandson, David Way; one daughter-in-law, Ellen Burcham; two brothers, Victor and Robert Whitworth; and one sister, Mabel Meyer.
Funeral services for Irene will be held on Tuesday, March 26, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at Prugh’s Chapel, Burlington, Iowa. Pastor Rob Carlton will officiate.
Interment will be at Aspen Grove Cemetery, Burlington, Iowa.
Friends may call after 8:00 a.m. on Monday, March 25. The family will receive friends on Monday evening from 6:00-7:30 p.m. in Prugh’s Chapel. Memorials have been established for Parkside First Baptist Church and Des Moines County Animal Shelter.
