Obituary
William "Bill" Schieffer, 87, who died Sunday, April 16, 2006, at Great River Medical Center's – Klein Center. Born July 13, 1918 in Burlington, he was the son of Siegfried and Marie Schaffer Schieffer. On December 26, 1969 he married Marjorie Schamper In St. John's Catholic Church. Mr. Schieffer attended St. John's school through ninth grade, was a graduate of Burlington High School, attended Burlington Junior College for one year then transferred to Iowa State University in Ames. He joined the Reserve Officer's Training Corps (R.O.T.C.) and joined the Army on January 12, 1942. He was a Captain in the Army Air Corps. After World War II, he and his brother Jake borrowed money and purchased M & M Drive Inn on the corner of Harrison and Main Streets where the waitresses wore roller skates. They later hired an architect to design a new restaurant, which became the Harrison House Restaurant and operated until 1985. Mr. Schieffer loved to read magazines like Smithsonian, National Geographic and U.S. News and World Report. He loved to travel to Milwaukee to experience the German atmosphere of restaurants, meats and cheese. Another favorite relaxation spot was Tan-Tar-A. He and his wife enjoyed vacations in San Francisco, New Orleans and many other places. Mr. Schieffer enjoyed raising Beagles. His brother Bob and he often took Scout, Trippett, Flossie and Lady to Field Trials for competition. He also loved photography and flowers. He was a member of SS John and Paul Catholic Church, Troop 3 of Boy Scouts, Order of the Arrow, and Keenagers. Survivors include his wife, Marjorie Schieffer of Burlington; two brothers, John "Jake" (Shirley) Schieffer of Burlington and Robert "Bob" (Lib) Schieffer of Keokuk; sister-in-law, Marian Schamper; six nephews; and six nieces Friends may call Wednesday, April 19th, in Lunning Chapel from noon until 5:00 p.m. The family will receive friends from 10:00 until 11:00 a.m. Thursday in St. John's Catholic Church. Memorials have been established for SS John and Paul Catholic Church and Great River Medical Center's – Klein Center.
