Mrs. Marian Viola Brunken, 91, of Burlington, died at 8:03 p.m. Tuesday, Octobe 23, 2012, at Unirversity of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City. Born September 13, 1921, in Attleboro, MA, she was the daughter of James Hilmer, Sr. and Edla Marie Lundgren Hanson. On February 28, 1945, she married Walter Brunken of Danville in Macon, GA. Mrs. Brunken was a 1939 graduate of Attleboro :High School. She attended Atlantic Union College in South Lancaster, MA and graduated with an RN in nursing from Hinsdale Adventist Hospital in Hinsdale, IL in 1944. She was emplyed for 10 yeas at Burlington Hospital. In 1958 she started her career with the Visiting Nurses Association. She became the Director of the VNA in 1968, a position she held until retiring on June 30, 1999. She has served on a number of boards, including Des Moines Neighborhood Center and Community Action of Southeast Iowa. In recent years she especially enjoyed meeting and welcoming visitors to Burlington at the Port of Burlington Welcome Center. She has been an active and dedicated member of the Burlington Seventh Day Adventist Church. She was very active in many roles and their faithful organist and pianist for nearly 60 years. She is survived by her husband Walter Brunken. She leaves her daughter Susan Dixon of Newburyport, MA; two grand-daughters, Amy Dixon of Andover, MA and Allison Montecalvo of Dover, NH; and two great-grandsons Tyler and Tucker Montecalvo; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother. The family will receive friends from 4 until 7 p.m. Monday, October 29th, at Lunning Chapel. The funeral service for Mrs. Brunken will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, October 30th, at Lunning Chapel. Pastor Dennis Mix will officiate. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. A memorial has been established in Mrs. Brunken's memory.
