Campbell, Bryce - 1819-1898
At 6:30 yesterday morning occurred the death of Bryce Campbell, from enlargement of the heart and dropsy, at his home 1409 1/2 Agency avenue. The deceased was one of the pioneer residents of Burlington, coming to this city in 1857.Mr. Campbell was born in Dunduff, Ayrshire, Scotland, March 31, 1819. He received his early education in Scotland, and when 16 years of age was apprenticed to learn the trade of carpenter and joiner, serving four years. October 19, 1848, in Parish of Leeds, County of York, Mr. Campbell was married to Miss Jane Rowling. By this union there were three children., Joseph R. of Washington, Ia., Mrs. John Gillis, of this city, and Maggie who died in infancy. In 1858 Mr. Campbell left England for America, landing at New Orleans. he came up the Mississippi by steamer to Keokuk, where he joined a party of Mormons who were going to Salt Lake City. He built a house there, but when he was asked to deed it to the church and marry several wives he sold his property and came to Burlington in 1857. Mrs. Campbell died Nov. 26, 1857. Mr. Campbell was married a second time to Mrs. Gent, widow of Henry Gent, who by her first union had two children, Edgar, of Wisconsin and Byron, of this city. By the second union he leaves one child, Mrs. Willis A. Pruden. His wife also survives. Mr. Campbell inherited all the firmness of character and ruggedness of his Scotch ancestry. He was a great admirer of Burns, and his residence was filled with mementoes of the great Scotchman. Mr. Campbell was an Odd Fellow, becoming a member of Royal Farmers' M.U. lodge, No 842, I.O.O.F. in England, in 1840 and was at the time of his death a member of Washington lodge No.1, of this city. He was also a member of the Knights of Pythias, Friendship lodge, No.7, of which he was one of the charter members, and in which he has been past chancelor. in 1878, he was appointed district deputy grand chancellor, serving six or seven years.
