Esther Gene Schwerin, 89, of Burlington, died at 7:30 AM Tuesday, November 15, 2016, at the Blair House Nursing & Rehabilitation Center.
Born February 27, 1927, in Fairfield, IA, she was the daughter of Esmond L. and Evangie L. Collier Wells. On February 25, 1950, she married Kenneth W. Schwerin in Burlington, IA. He died on December 31, 1989.
Esther worked as a registered nurse for 32 years. She worked at a nursery preschool for 10 years and at a rehabilitation center for 16 1/2 years. Esther traveled many miles over Southeast Iowa as a nurse with the WIC Program.
She was an active member of Bethany Lutheran Church. She was a master gardener and was a certified Caring Clown named Pixie.
Survivors include one son, William Craig (Debbie Watson) Schwerin of Mount Prospect, IL; two daughters, Pamela Jean Schwerin of Reasnor, IA, Patricia Lea Schwerin of Houston, TX; three brothers, Donald (Glenda) Wells of Saint Louis, MO, Larry (Karen) Wells of Des Moines, IA, David (Connie) Wells of Fairfield, IA; one sister, Pauline Kaplan of Tucson, AZ; and several nieces and nephews.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, five brothers, James, Andy, Henry, Marvin, Charlie, and one brother-in-law, Al Kaplan.
Visitation will be from 12:00 PM until 5:00 PM with the family to receive friends from 3:00 PM until 5:00 PM Sunday, November 20, 2016 at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home.
Cremation will be entrusted to the Prugh-Thielen Funeral Home & Crematory following the visitation.
The memorial service for Ms. Schwerin will be 11:00 AM Monday, November 21, 2016, at Bethany Lutheran Church with Pastor Paul Hermansen officiating. A time of food and fellowship will be immediately following the service at Bethany Lutheran Church. Graveside committal services of cremated remains will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery at 1:30 PM.
Memorials have been established for Bethany Lutheran Church and Jane Delano Student Nurse Scholarship.
