Barbara Jean Brown, 75, of Oquawka, Ill., died Saturday, July 24, 2010, at Great River Medical Center in West Burlington. Born November 17, 1934, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Edward C. and Catherine Anna Cronk Bliss. On May 5, 1956, she married Marvin L. Brown in Burlington. Mrs. Brown was a homemaker. She worked as a telephone operator while in high school. She graduated from Burlington High School in 1952. She was of the Protestant faith. She served 10 years as a Girl Scout Leader, and was one of the original members of the Des Moines County Riding Club. She enjoyed gardening and horses. Survivors include her husband; one brother, Donald Bliss of Burlington; and one sister, Janet Messer of Holts Summit, MO. She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister. Friends may call from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Lunning Chapel in Burlington, where the family will receive friends. The body has been cremated. The memorial service for Mrs. Brown will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Lunning Chapel, with the Rev. David Plooster officiating. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery in Burlington. A memorial has been established for the Des Moines County Humane Society.
