Mr. and Mrs. Bergman reside in the downstairs part of the home at 718 S. 12th street. One son, Edwin; her Daughter, Mrs. Herman Hartnach, and her family live upstairs. All had retired for the night Saturday night, Mr. and Mrs. Bergman going to bed about 10 o’clock. About 3 a.m. Sunday, Mr. Hartnach arose and started downstairs. He smelled gas and immediately awoke Edwin Bergman and informed him that the house was full of gas.
The two men went downstairs and they found Mrs. Bergman in a room in the east part of the house which is used as a summer kitchen and washroom. She was lying on the floor of the room, the gas jets turned on and all the doors closed. She was attired in a kimona. Two other jets in the room also were turned on.
In the downstairs bedroom, they found Mr. Bergman asleep The gas fumes had not heard his wife when she got out of bed and went into the room in which she took her life. A physician was called and he stated that Mrs. Bergman had been dead about an hour.
