Miller Roads Brooks, 81, of Phillipsburg, N.J., formerly of Burlington, died Wednesday, June 7, 2000, at Lehigh Valley Hospital in Salisbury Township, Pa.
Born July 4, 1918, in Burlington, he was the son of Miller Roads Sr and Adna NL Mason Brooks. On April 28, 1943, he married Mussette M. Trulock. Brooks was chief engineer in charge of design and development for the AXI-compressor division of Ingersoll Rand, retiring in 1984 after 38 years. He joined Ingersoll Rand in 1946 as an engineer in the blower department and was appointed chief of industrial machinery for the turbo products division after a visor in the steam turbine group.
He was a recipient of the distinguished Engineering Award from the Lehigh Valley Chapter of the Pennsylvania Society of Professional Engineers for his outstanding contributions in the engineering profession. He was honored as a leader in design of high-pressure turbines end large flow compressors used in the refinery and chemical processing industries.
He was a World War II Navy veteran with the rank of lieutenant, where he served in the Pacific Theater and participated in the invasion of Tarawa. He then was appointed
chief engineer on the USS Mercury. He was a 1941 graduate of Iowa State University in Ames with a bachelor's of science degree in mechanical engineering He was a member •of Alpha Sigma Phi Fraternity, St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Phillipsburg, where he was on the Vestry, Professional Society of Engineers Pennsylvania Chapter and the
Navy League. He was a volunteer at Warren Hospital's Chaplain Service and for Phillipsburg's Meals on Wheels. He was past president of the Phillipsburg Exchange Club, president of the Heart Healthy Zipper Club and treasurer of the Society of New Jersey Utility Investors.
Survivors include his wife; one son, Peter Edwin Brooks of Allentown, Pa.; two daughters, Susan Elizabeth Brooks of Phillipsburg and Patricia Roth of Pattenburg, N.J.; one granddaughter; one niece; three great-nephews; and one great-great-niece. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Visitation will begin after 8 a.m. Monday at Prugh's Chapel. There will be no family visitation.
A graveside committal service for Mr. Brooks will at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Aspen Grove Cemetery, with the Rev. Patrick Genereux officiating.
Memorials have been established for St. Luke's Episcopal Church and Phillipsburg Exchange Club.
