John Carter Bromley, 70, of Greeley, Colo., died Wednesday, March 26, 2008, at North Colorado Medical Center. The son of Charles D. Bromley and his wife, the former Sarah Wendelken, he was born on October 5, 1937, at St. Luke's Hospital in Denver. He attended Denver Public Schools, graduating from East High School in 1955. He began his college career at the University of Colorado and also attended the University of Michigan. He took his BA in 1961 and his MA in 1963. In 1962 he joined the faculty at Wayne State College, where he taught English and American literature. In 1965, he became Headmaster of the International School in Copenhagen, and the same year he was appointed to the faculty of the University of Colorado. In 1970 he left CU to become a speech writer and then Director of Research in the office of Colorado Governor John A. Love, where he worked until he was asked to cover the election of 1974 as a columnist for the Rocky Mountain News. In 1975 he returned to the capitol as Legislative Assistant to the Senate Majority Leader. He continued to work in politics until his appointment to the University of Northern Colorado faculty in 1985, where he served until his death. After a decade of teaching at UNC, he was appointed to the faculty of the Monfort College of Business. As Associate Professor of University Studies in the Monfort College, he continued his long association with the University's Honors Program and taught in a variety of other programs from 1996-2000, when he was named Director of the President's Leadership Program. From 1995-2007, he was arts critic for the Greeley Tribune, writing about theatre, dance and music. His book "The Shakespearean Kings" recently was acquired as an Internet property by Questia, and he is the author of a wide range of other scholarly and popular articles. During his UNC career, he was named Adviser of the Year four times and he was chosen a Mortar Board Favorite Professor in most of his UNC years. He was a member of the Chi Psi Fraternity and the Greeley Country Club. Survivors include his wife, Susan Plock Bromley of Greeley; a daughter, Lauren Bromley Hodge of Hillsborough, N.C.; a stepdaughter, Karen Marshall of Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands; a brother, James Bromley of Bethesda, MD; three grandchildren, Callum Harper and Hannah and Daisy Hodge, all of Hillsborough; a step-granddaughter, Katie Armstrong of Grand Cayman; and five nieces and nephews, Susan, Ben, Michael, Chris and Bill. He was preceded in death by his parents. The funeral service will be at 2:30 p.m. Monday at First Congregational Church in Greeley. Visitation will be 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Allnutt Funeral Service - Macy Chapel.
