Madlynne R. Broeg, 91, of Burlington, died at 9:00 AM Monday, August 12, 2013, at the Blair House Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Burlington. Born September 8, 1921, in Oakville, IA, she was the daughter of John Francis and Lucy Kerr Schultz. She attended schools in Oakville, IA. After high school graduation in 1938, she attended Burlington Junior College for two years. She then attended the Burlington Hospital School of Nursing for three years and was a Registered Nurse. After her graduation in 1943, she enlisted in the U.S. Army Nurse Corp. along with most of her other class students. She was sent to Colorado Springs, CO for her Basic Training and was commissioned a 2nd Lt. From here, she was sent to Camp Crowder, MO, and then on to the east coast and sent overseas. She served in England, France, and Germany during her time overseas. She was Honorably Discharged in February 1946. She then returned to the Burlington Hospital for a few years. She then went to work at the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant for Day and Zimmerman as a Government Nurse and worked at the Plant Hospital. Later she did Private Duty Nursing and returned to the Burlington Hospital, also Burlington Medical Center, as a Staff Nurse. She retired from Nursing in 1982 after 40 years of service. On October 14, 1950, she married Edward Eugene Broeg in First United Methodist Church in Burlington. He died May 10, 2005. When she married, they joined the membership of First United Methodist Church of Burlington and she had been a member there for 63 years. She was also a member of the Women's Society of the Church and was a member of the Sarah Circle. She is also a member of AARP. After her retirement, she had did volunteer work for the church, and R.S.V.P. She loved her church, watching sports, reading good books, and especially her grandkids. Survivors include one son, Craig Eugene (Jane Ellen) Broeg of Burlington; two grandchildren, Katie (Joshua) Salisbury and Kacie Broeg; and several nieces and nephews. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, and one sister, Mille Diewold. Visitation will be from 8:00 AM until 7:00 PM with the family to receive friends from 6:00 PM until 7:00 PM Wednesday, August 14, 2013, at Thielen Funeral Home. The funeral service for Mrs. Broeg will be 10:00 AM Thursday, August 15, 2013, at Thielen Funeral Home with Reverend Mike Orthel officiating. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. A time of food and fellowship will be held in the Fellowship Hall at Grace United Methodist Church following the burial. A memorial has been established for the Blair House.
