Garrett Martin Brockway, 10, of Burlington, died at 4:19 PM Wednesday, February 27, 2013, at the University of Iowa Children's Hospital in Iowa City.
Born February 9, 2003, in West Burlington, he was the son of Bruce Martin and Tiffini Dee Hartman Brockway.
Garrett was a fourth-grader at Burlington Notre Dame Elementary School.
He was a member of SS. John and Paul Catholic Church where he was an altar server. He was also a member of Boys Scouts of America where he was a Webelos Scout, the Burlington Little League, YMCA Soccer and Basketball, the YMCA/YWCA Safari Club, had earned a dark green belt in Tae Kwon Do, and was a member of the Academy of Model Aeronautics. He was a teller for the F&M kid's bank. Garrett was an avid St. Louis Cardinals and Chicago Bears fan. He loved attending school at Notre Dame and going to church every Sunday. Hobbies Garrett enjoyed were reading, playing with his friends, building Lego sets, flying radio control airplanes, and participating in youth triathlon and 5ks.
Survivors include his parents, Bruce and Tiffini of Burlington; one sister, Adeline Brockway at home; paternal grandparents, Terry and Joyce Brockway of Burlington; maternal grandparents, Jim and LuJuan Hartman of Burlington; paternal aunts and uncles, Joe and Denise Hanks, John and Cathy Rheinschmidt, all of Burlington; maternal aunt and uncle, Ryan and Tracey Hartman of Denver, CO; ten cousins, Jacob, Lydia, Caitlin, Joel, Shelby, Camryn, Anna, Natalie, Grady, and Charlotte; paternal great-aunts and uncles, Jim and Linda Brockway of Burlington, Mark and Maria Brockway of Burlington, and Glen and Karen Webster of Lomax, IL, Jerry and Connie Herman of Burlington, Sue Herman of Castle Rock, CO, Rita Lewis of Carthage, IL; maternal great-aunts and uncles, Bill and Vicky Miller of Mediapolis, David and Jann Full of Iowa City, David and Teena Pflum of Minneapolis, MN, William and Rebecca Fried of Olds, IA, and Henry and Linda Hartman of Littleton, CO.
He was preceded in death by one great uncle Tom Herman and his great grandparents.
Visitation will be from 10:00 AM until 8:00 PM with the family to receive friends following a 4:00 PM Rosary Service until 8:00 PM Monday, March 4, 2013, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church.
The Funeral Mass of the Resurrection for Garrett will be 1:30 PM Tuesday, March 5, 2013, at Burlington Notre Dame School with Rev. Father Marty Goetz as the Celebrant and Rev. Father Bruce DeRammelaere and Very Rev. Father Patrick Hilgendorf as the concelebrants. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established to the Iowa Donor Network and for a scholarship in Garrett's name at Burlington Notre Dame Schools.
