Obituary
The body of Henry S. Bartruff, an early pioneer of Burlington, whose death occurred in this city Friday night was shipped to Burlington for burial, and the Hawkeye of that city speaks of him in the following words of praise:
“Henry S. Bartruff was born at Frankfort, Hampshire county, Virginia, April 29, 1816. Came west in 1839 and went into business with F. Barcht, on the 11th day of March 1840, at Burlington, where they continued in the furniture business for many years. On Dec. 10, 1841, he married Miss Mary Elen Marlow of Burlington who has preceded him 12 years. She died in Burlington on Aug 13, 1888, since which time the deceased had resided with his daughter. Mrs. Edward E. Miller, East Sixth Street, Davenport, Ia Mr. Bartruff was a lifelong Democrat until the last national election when he cast his first vote for the Republican ticket. Deceased had always enjoyed the best of health until about six months ago when he commenced feeling his age. Since that time he has been confined at his home with Mr. and Mrs. Miller where kind hands were ever ready to administer to his needs. He died at his home with Mr. and Mrs. Miller on Jan. 4, 1901, at the ripe age of 85 years. He is survived by four daughters and one son, as follows: Mrs. Emily Webster of St. Paul, Minn., CK Bartruff, Des Moines, Ia., Mrs. JG Stephen, Aurora, Ill., Mrs. Clark Bonnell, Chicago, Ill., and Mrs. Edward Miller, Davenport, Ia.
His body will arrive here by train Monday, the 7th Instant, at 12:30 and will be taken immediately to Aspen Grove cemetery for interment in the family lot. Short services will be held at the grave.”
