Dorothy Daniell Schramm, 96, died Saturday, Jan. 28, 2006, in Salisbury, Conn. Born June 16, 1909, in Tilton, N.H., she was the daughter of Otis and Ethyl Rllsbmy Daniell. She married James S. Schramm. He preceded her in death. Mrs. Schramm lived in Burlington, where she played major roles in various civic organizations. She attended Tilton School, Bennett College in Millbrook, N.Y, and Barnard College. Sloe focused on world affairs, government and art She was state president and national vice president of the United Nations Association, chair of the First UN Day, member of national and international assemblies and committees and author and editor steering committee for the Na tional Peace Institute in Iowa. She organized the Burlington League of Women Voters, served on state and national league boards, and in 1948 authored the handbook "You Are Democracy," a national publication. She was first chair of Burlington's Planning and Zoning Commission. The human relations survey she organized resulted in the end of Burlington's public segregation, several "firsts" in employment, a Mayor's Civic Unity Commission and a local NAACP. Her concern for justice was expressed by her work on the Iowa Council of Judicial Reform and the Judicial Selection Committee. A collector of contemporary and African art, she organized and supported many art associations and councils. She served on the board of the Des Moines Art Center and the University of Iowa Art Museum, as well as various other art organizations. Her honors include the 1971 University of Iowa Distinguished Service Award and an LLD degree from Grinnell College. She was inducted into the Iowa Women's Hall of Fame in 1986 and received the Arnold Goodman Award from the UNA-USA in 1989. The Iowa UNA awarded her the Scroll of Honor in 1989 and designated her a Special Citizen of the World in 1997. She was a member of Unitarian Universalist Fellowship in Burlington. She moved to Connecticut in 2000. Survivors include one daughter, Kristina Chandler of Lakeville, Conn.; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and three great- great-grandchildren. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by one daughter and one grandson. A memorial service for Mrs. Schramm will be at a later time this year in Burlington. Memorials have been established for the United Nations Association of Iowa or a charity of the donor's choice.
